Reach for the Lights
Bright aurora display from Tromso

The Aurora Borealis is nature's very own light show. They are caused by an interaction between the constant outpouring
of charged particles from the Sun and the Earth's magnetic field. As energised particles
head down the magneetic lines of force close to Earth's poles, they cause atoms in our atmosphere
to excite and glow. The net result is a beautiful display of the Northern Lights.
This image was taken on the 14th February 2007 from a location 420m above the Norwegian city of Tromso. The
camera was wedged into the snow and pre-programmed for the shot. The silhouetted figure reaching for the lights
is the photographer, Pete Lawrence.
