Prominence Evolution

Our nearest star, the Sun, is rarely quiet. This image sequence shows the evolution of a prominence, a cloud of highly excited gas
hanging off the edge of the Sun, over the course of seven hours on May 7th 2008.
Each sequence image was taken using a specialist hydrogen-alpha filter, a device which allows astronomers
to see glowing hydrogen close to the Sun's surface.
